<I>Women of Starbucks</I> a Real Eye-Opener

Playboy Home Video is hoping the new Women of Starbucks (VHS/DVD $19.98) will be as much of an eye-opener for viewers as one of the steaming beverages served at the coffee company.

“It's an idea expanded from the reality genre,” said Scott Barton, VP of public relations for Playboy Entertainment Group. “These are basic working girls from Starbucks who get the Playboy treatment.”

The scheduled Oct. 7 release, in partnership with Image Entertainment, follows up on a successful pictorial package that ran in Playboy magazine recently, featuring several beautiful, real-life Starbucks brewers and servers demonstrating talents in styles and poses not generally seen at your strip mall or corner franchise.

“Our viewers like the idea of everyday people placed in the world of erotica,” Barton said. “A theme like this illustrates that pretty much everybody has a deeply erotic side. The girls were a riot and really excited to have this opportunity. It was a fun, safe playing environment for them and quite a departure from their everyday lives.”

The everyday-person theme is a longstanding Playboy drawing card.

“The Playmates are the same way,” he said. “They are women plucked from their hometowns. People don't think of them that way, but the whole point of the Playmate is the girl-next-door feeling. Some 50 years later, the perception is that they are professional models, but they are no different than anyone else.”

Playboy Home Video has done themes with motocross and the women of Enron, but Women of Starbucks may be its most down-to-earth reality title yet, with perhaps more to follow.

“If people open their eyes and look around, there are beautiful, sexy women everywhere, so the possibilities are endless,” Barton said.

Reality is also an adjunct theme to Playboy's titles dealing with couples. Another Oct. 7 release is the For Couples Only Collector's Set (DVD $29.98), featuring the titles 101 Ways to Excite Your Lover, Complete Massage and Best Kept Sex Secrets.

“Couples titles are evergreen,” Barton said. “We believe the country and the buying public as a whole is becoming more embracing of its sexuality, and videos become an excellent way to convey information on how to better enjoy one's sensuality.”

In the titles, featuring massage technique, sexual hypnotherapy and other avenues of intimacy, the pursuit is honesty.

“When you see these videos, you witness the communication that is made,” Barton said. “You see people opening new doors.”

Other upcoming Playboy Home Video titles include the Oct. 7 release Secret Caller (VHS/DVD $19.98), followed Nov. 4 by Thrust: Drive Fast, Race Hard and Adult Stars: Close Up, and Nov. 11 by 2004 Video Playmate Calendar. A new title from Image Entertainment is Hugh Hefner: American Playboy (DVD $19.99).
