Two Towers a Runaway Hit at Retail29 Aug, 2003 By: Erik Gruenwedel
Last week’s DVD release of New Line Entertainment’s The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers is turning out to be a bonanza at retail, with first-week unit sales expected to top 700,000 at some of the national chains, according to published reports.
Mark Higgins, divisional merchandise manager for Trans World Entertainment in Albany, N.Y., said Two Towers will be one of its top sellers based on first-day sales.
“It could be our top title for first-week sales in 2003,” Higgins said.
Musicland VP of purchasing Peter Busch concurred, saying the title exceeded its expectations by more than 20 percent.
“Last year, the combined numbers of The Lord of the Rings [“The Fellowship of the Ring”] and extended version made it our best-selling title,” Busch said. “Our hope is that we may see the same this year.”
A Two Towers four-disc extended-edition DVD is scheduled to be released on Nov. 18.
