It's 'Open Season' at Sales Counter8 Feb, 2007 By: Thomas K. Arnold
Sony Pictures Home Entertainment's Open Season easily took the top spot on the national DVD sales chart for the week ended Feb. 4. The animated feature, which generated $84.3 million in theaters over the holidays, outsold its nearest competitor, 20th Century Fox's The Marine, by a margin of nearly 3-to-1.
The Marine, an actioner about a group of diamond thieves that grossed $18.8 million at the box office, did manage to storm to the top of Home Media Magazine's video rental chart for the week, earning an estimated $6.3 million to second-ranked Open Season's $6 million.
Two other new releases debuted in the top 10 on the Nielsen VideoScan First Alert sales chart for the week: MGM's Flyboys at No. 3 and Sony Pictures' Facing the Giants at No. 7. 20th Century Fox's Little Miss Sunshine, meanwhile, rose from No. 10 to No. 8 its seventh week in stores. The comedy is the only one of the five best picture nominees already available on video and, according to Fox, experienced an “Oscar bump” as soon as the nominees were announced, with sales rising as much as 200% at some retail stores.
On the rental chart, Flyboys also debuted at No. 3, with estimated earnings of $5.7 million. The previous week's top renter, Lionsgate's Saw III, slipped to No. 4, with rental earnings of $5.6 million.
