Sinbad Sails To Stores Nov. 1818 Aug, 2003 By: Stephanie Prange
Mirroring last year's successful video release of Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron, DreamWorks Home Entertainment will also bow the animated Sinbad: Legend of the Seven Seas during the week before Thanksgiving.
The title, which is expected to tally $28 million at the box office, streets Nov. 18 (prebook Sept. 30) at $15.95 MAP on VHS and $19.95 MAP on DVD.
Despite the under-$30 million box office take, DreamWorks head of domestic home video Kelly Sooter said, like Spirit, which tallied $75 million and the box office and sold 7 million units on video, Sinbad should do well in the home market. She said, “There's no reason why [Sinbad] can't do three-and-a-half million units.”
Sinbad will include a new six-minute program, “Cyclops Island,” made exclusively for the video, in which kids can choose from several adventure paths with the DVD remote. The cassette will also have the sequence. Sooter said talent, including the voice actors, stayed on to do the added footage. “As they completed the movie, they moved right into this new piece of animation,” she said.
Marketing includes tie-in partners Baskin-Robbins, M&Ms, Intel, Regal Cinemas, Applebee's Neighborhood Grill and Bar, and Hewlett-Packard. In an instant- win game like that used for the Spirit promotion, consumers can win prizes such as a Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo, a boat and Baskin-Robbins ice cream cones. The video will also include a coupon for free M&Ms.
