<I>Seabiscuit</I> Fast Out of the Gate With 2.5M Units

Universal Studios Home Video says its Golden Globe-nominated horseracing period drama Seabiscuit sold a combined 2.5 million VHS/DVD units, generating about $35 million in revenue in the first 24 hours of retail release Tuesday.

The title's strong debut makes it a likely contender to finish 2003 as the industry's top-selling home video drama, supplanting 8 Mile, (also from USHV) starring Eminem, which raked in $75 million in consumer spending during its first week of retail release in March.

Seabiscuit is being sold as a single disc ($26.98 SRP) and double-disc gift pack with no minimum advertised price (MAP).

“It's a Seabiscuit week around here,” said Evan Fong, executive director of publicity at USHV.
