Mulan Has Alternate Beginnings3 May, 2004 By: Holly J. Wagner
Alternate endings are nothing new to DVD, but Mulan will get alternate openings on the double-disc special edition due Oct. 26, according to Buena Vista Home Entertainment.
Mulan has been on moratorium since Feb. 4, 2002. It was first released on DVD and VHS in 1999. The new edition is completely reformatted, one frame at a time, working from the film's original digitally stored files.
The special edition will include not only the digitally remastered feature and other openings, but a new song; games and activities; new music videos, including the “I'll Make a Man Out Of You” video sung by Donny Osmond with action from martial arts star Jackie Chan; an audio commentary; a “Discovering Mulan” featurette that goes behind the scenes with the filmmakers; and a 5.1 home theater audio remix.
Among the new items is “Mulan's World,” an educational view of what life was like in ancient China, hosted by Mushu, the pocket-sized dragon.
Details of what a feature called “Digital Dim Sum” will include were not yet available.
Prebook is Aug. 31, Sept. 14 via distributors. The two-disc DVD is $29.99; VHS, $24.99; collector's DVD gift set, $49.99.
