Monsters Inc. sold 5 million units of combined DVD and VHS in its first day of release Tuesday and may be on its way to a record-setting finish for Buena Vista Home Entertainment and Pixar Animation Studios, the companies announced today.
Studio executives are expecting more monster-sized results going forward, anticipating that the first-day numbers indicate the title will finish the season as one of the top-selling videos of the year.
“This tremendous response validates the innovative blend of creativity and technology that went into making the greatest DVD possible from a critically acclaimed film,” noted Michael Eisner, CEO of The Walt Disney Co.
First-day domestic sales included DVD and VHS and topped the previous record of Disney's The Lion King at 4.5 million VHS units.
Although BVHE has high expectations for the film, president Bob Chapek said the studio doesn't anticipate that Monsters Inc. will beat The Lion King in ultimate sales.
“However, with the tremendous support by both retail and consumers this new day one record reinforces the love that consumers have held for this magnificent film,” he added.
The two-disc DVD and VHS ($29.99 DVD; $24.99 VHS) feature a new animated short “Mike's New Car” created exclusively for the release, the Academy Award-winning Pixar short For the Birds and outtakes by the Monsters Inc. characters.
