Image Entertainment has signed a worldwide distribution deal with controversial R&B artist R. Kelly, including his first live concert DVD.
Chatsworth, Calif.-based Image said it expects to release Kelly's March concert at the Paramount Theatre in Oakland, Calif., in high-definition on DVD and digital distribution in the first quarter of 2007.
In addition to the concert footage, the DVD will feature requisite behind-the-scenes material and an up-close-and-personal look at the Jive Records' superstar, whose 40 million CD sales include such hits as "Bump & Grind" (1994), "I Believe I Can Fly" (1996), "Ignition (Remix)" (2003) and mini-opera "Trapped In The Closet" (2005).
The DVD is being produced by Ann Carli and directed by Jim Swaffield, who both did the "Trapped in the Closet" DVD as well as Britney Spears' "Greatest Hits" DVD, which sold more than one million units.
"R. Kelly is one of the hottest and bestselling R&B performers of all time," said Barry Gordon, SVP of worldwide programming of Image. "This will be the first R. Kelly full-length concert event to be released on DVD and we are anticipating a huge response from his millions of fans around the world."
It remains to be seen whether any behind-the-scenes material about Kelly include mention of his 2002 indictment for allegations of multiple counts of soliciting, videotaping and producing child pornography.
