Forty-eight hours after its release, retail sales of The Lion King Special Edition two-disc DVD and VHS have topped 3 million units, according to Buena Vista Home Entertainment.
The title is the top-selling Disney home entertainment video this year.
The $29.99 DVD set (VHS $24.99) offers a digitally remastered second edition with reanimated sequences and a new song, “Morning Report,” by Elton John and Tim Rice.
The disc, which is available for the first time in a proprietary 5.1 surround sound mix, also features deleted scenes, 3-D animation with menu options, games, music videos, behind-the-scenes footage, interviews and international editions.
“We couldn't be happier that the public has responded to the title in this way,” said Gordon Ho, SVP of brand marketing for Buena Vista Home Entertainment.
