Walt Disney Pictures' The Lion King 1-1/2 tallied 3 million DVD/VHS unit sales since its release Feb. 10, ranking the title among the best-selling direct-to-video (DTV) DVDs of all time, according to distributor Buena Vista Home Entertainment.
“Disney has traditionally dominated the direct-to-video industry, so it is no surprise that “King” will continue to build upon that success,” said Bob Chapek, president of BVHE.
He's not exaggerating.
In addition to all-time DTV sales leader The Lion King II, which has moved 12 million VHS/DVD units since its release Oct. 27, 1998, the Top 10 animated DTV sellers originate from Disney, including The Return of Jafar (10.3 million), Beauty and the Beast (8.8 million), Aladdin and the King of Thieves (8.1 million), Little Mermaid II (7.4 million), Lady and the Tramp II (6.5 million), Cinderella II (5.9 million), Pooh's Grand Adventure (5.8 million), Pocahontas II (4.5 million), and Stitch! The Movie, with 4.1 million units, according to Video Store Magazine Market Research.
