Lilo & Stitch Sells 3 Million in First Day4 Dec, 2002 By: Hive News
Lilo & Stitch sold 3 million copies of the DVD/VHS home video release in its first day on the shelves Dec. 2, according to Buena Vista Home Entertainment. Approximately 70 percent of those unit sales were in DVD, which carried a suggested retail price of $29.99. The VHS was priced at $24.99. Minimum advertised price was $20.
This is just the beginning for the $144 million box office hit, said Bob Chapek, president of Buena Vista Home Entertainment.
“We have a consistent marketing sellthrough program in retail and in media that runs right through Christmas and beyond,” Chapek said. “It'll have strong legs, and I think it's going to do numbers that will surprise a lot of people.”
Chapek said the title's performance was a surprise for the studio, and the strong DVD sellthrough was even more so. “We have a lot of rush orders going out to retailers now,” he said. Though he would not divulge shipment numbers, Chapek said the studio eschews blowing out big shipments and said the shipment numbers for Lilo & Stitch were “very clean.”
“We have a very good replenishment system,” he added.
