Goosebumps Creator Goes Direct-to-DVD25 Mar, 2004 By: Erik Gruenwedel
The Hatchery, an upstart TV and film production company headed by industry veterans Margaret Loesch and Bruce Stein, together with Universal Home Entertainment Productions, a unit of Universal Pictures, will develop a first-ever series of straight-to-DVD films involving select horror works from award-winning children's author R.L. Stine.
It's unclear who'll distribute the titles; at deadline, representatives from The Hatchery and Universal were unavailable for comment.
Under the working title “R.L. Stine Presents,” Loesch and Stein will executive produce an undetermined number of feature-length videos based on anthologies of Stine's short stories -- The Haunting Hour and Nightmare Hour -- with Stine appearing as host and in the bonus material.
Dan Angel and Billy Brown, who executive produced the 2003 TNT original movie Door to Door, starring William H. Macy, Kyra Sedgwick and Helen Mirren, will script the films.
“R.L. Stine is one of this country's great storytellers, and this is an ideal platform for those stories,” said Loesch. “His stories have an amazing and broad appeal, and families will want to create home libraries of these original films.”
Stine's other works include “Fear Street” and “Goosebumps,” which ran as an animated TV series on Fox when Loesch was president/CEO of Fox Kids Worldwide. That series was released by Fox Home Video last September.
