The Walt Disney Co.'s Beauty and the Beast is performing at near-record box office levels across the IMAX theatre network, including IMAX Corp.-owned and operated sites. Playing on 67 screens in the U.S. and Canada, the film grossed about $2.1 million last weekend and $8 million since its Jan. 1 launch. The film is also playing on more than 30 screens outside the U.S. and Canada, the grosses of which were not published. It is the first of four films Disney is expected to release to IMAX over the next year. Future titles are slated to include Ultimate-X, The Young Black Stallion and a repurposed version of The Lion King.
"We are thrilled with Disney's commitment to our format and its role as an industry visionary," said IMAX co-chief executive officers Richard L. Gelfond and Bradley J. Wechsler. "These films coupled with our 3D film SPACE STATION, James Cameron's Ghosts of the Abyss and other releases to the theater network should generate strong performance throughout the year."
