Alias Features Fan Commentary17 Jun, 2004 By: Jessica Wolf
This one's for anyone who has ever screamed at the TV during their favorite show.
Two fans of ABC's hot spy actioner “Alias” recorded a fan commentary May 21 for “The Two,” the premiere episode of the show's third season, which hits DVD Sept. 7 from Buena Vista Home Entertainment (BVHE).
It's a first for TV-on-DVD programming and possibly a first in the history of DVD extras. The idea for a fan commentary came from the show's producer/creator J.J. Abrams, said Lori McPherson, VP of brand marketing for BVHE.
“He really appreciates the loyal fan base ‘Alias' has,” she said.
BVHE held a radio call-in “Alias” trivia contest through WCKG FM in Chicago for “Alias” fans in Illinois, Indiana, Wisconsin and Michigan.
The winner, Jennifer Wong, dubbed “The World's Biggest ‘Alias' Fan” from Chicago, recorded the commentary alongside Erin Dailey, also known as “Regina,” resident “Alias” critic at TV fan Web site Televisionwithoutpity.com.
Including Dailey in the commentary track was a way to broaden the appeal, McPherson said. The Web site is home to plenty of voracious “Alias” fans.
“It's always nice to have a couple of people on a commentary because they can talk to each other and play off each other, especially when one of them is really an expert on critiquing the show,” McPherson said.
Confidentiality agreements prohibit Wong or Dailey from speaking to the press about their stint as DVD commentators but Televisionwithoutpity.com recapper Dailey gave her loyal Internet followers a hint at how the recording session went on the site's message boards shortly after she recorded the commentary track with Wong.
Some posters to the Web site who were previously vacillating on whether to buy the upcoming set said they now plan to pick it up to hear the fan commentary.
