Universal Pictures has upped James M. Horowitz to EVP, business and legal affairs.
Horowitz, who joined Universal's feature legal department in 1992, has served as SVP, business and legal affairs since October 1999. In his new post, he will continue to report to Rick Finkelstein, president and chief operating officer, and will be responsible for the day-to-day operations of the business and legal affairs departments, in addition to continuing to handle and oversee all matters relating to Universal's term deals.
Among his new responsibilities, Horowitz will also be the primary business liaison at the studio for Working Title Films and will oversee all business transactions involving coproductions and distribution deals, including those with Miramax Films, which has partnered with Universal on such films as Shakespeare in Love, Bridget Jones's Diary, Captain Corelli's Mandolin,' The Musketeer, Forty Days and Forty Nights and the upcoming Cinderella Man. He will also oversee Universal's business with DreamWorks Pictures, which includes such coproductions as Gladiator, A Beautiful Mind and Dr. Seuss' The Cat in the Hat.
"Jimmy is one of the most highly respected and well-liked executives in the industry, and Universal has benefited immensely from his excellent relationships throughout the entertainment community as well as his leadership within the company," Finkelstein said.
Prior to joining Universal, Horowitz served as counsel for the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers, after practicing law for three years at Greenberg, Glusker, Fields, Claman and Machtinger. He began his career at Manatt, Phelps and Phillips after graduating from George Washington University School of Law in 1986.
