Holiday Traffic Clogs iTunes Store28 Dec, 2006 By: Jessica Wolf
There were a few nightmares and some Dreamgirls for post-Christmas iTunes shoppers this week.
Massive traffic on Apple's popular music and video download site Christmas Day and the day after — more than four times the previous year, according to analyst reports — clogged the system, with some users clocking 20 minutes for a single song download.
Traffic has since cleared and the site is functioning properly.
Meanwhile, as DreamWorks Entertainment's critically lauded Dreamgirls expands its theatrical release, iTunes shoppers can grab free videos from the movie on the site, including two song numbers from the musical, a four-minute making of featurette and an exclusive montage, as well as trailers and teasers.
Though DreamWorks is using iTunes to boost promotional efforts for the hit film, the studio is not yet on board to offer full-movie downloads via the Apple service.
So far the only studio that allows full feature film purchases on iTunes is Disney, with movies becoming available on the site simultaneously with the DVD release.
