High-def Format VMD to Hit Iceland

1 Nov, 2007 By: Chris Tribbey

Apocalypto is among the films to be distributed on VMD.

New Medium Enterprises Inc., which has developed a third high-def format (Versatile Multilayer Disc), has reached an agreement with two independent film distributors, SENA and Myndform, to distribute titles on the format in Iceland.

New Medium will bundle five titles with its 1080p HD VMD player, including Lucky Number Slevin, the “Saw” films, Apocalypto, We Were Soldiers, Scary Movie and others.

“The HD VMD format is the only affordable high definition solution for both the independent distributors and the consumer today,” said Gunnar Gunnarsson, president of Myndform. “The quality and the price point of the hardware mean more volume on sales for software. It's perfect solution for people looking for the HD Home theatre experience that one can afford.”

Based on red-laser technology, New Medium maintains HD VMD “provides access to HD at a cost comparable to DVD, posing a serious challenge to Blu-ray and HD DVD.”
