HD DVD: Down by Decision19 Feb, 2008 By: Erik Gruenwedel
What do former undisputed middleweight boxing champion Jermain Taylor and HD DVD share in common?
Both suffered crushing defeats Feb. 16.
Taylor, who was hoping to avenge a stunning 7th round knockout loss to Kelly Pavlik last September in Atlantic City, considered the pay-per-view rematch at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas a must-win situation.
So too, apparently, did Universal Studios Home Entertainment. The studio's Feb. 19 DVD/HD DVD release of American Gangster was an official co-sponsor of the fight.
While ringside announcer Michael Buffer bellowed Gangster's release on DVD and HD DVD between under-card fights and prior to the main event, Toshiba was quietly pulling the plug on HD DVD.
If there was a silver lining, it is perhaps that both Taylor and HD DVD were defeated by decision (corporate and judges), not knockout.
