HD DVD Ahead in Sales Growth18 Jul, 2007 By: John Latchem
HD DVD players and movies enjoyed a recent sales surge.
The North American HD DVD Promotional Group announced that overall HD DVD hardware sales were up 37% from Q1 to Q2 2007, while software sales experienced a 20% increase in growth. The data is based on reports from NPD, Nielsen and the studios.
During the same frame, Blu-ray Disc hardware sales declined 27% and software sales were down 5%.
The spurt is credited to spring marketing efforts, which included a price drop for some HD DVD players to $299. Dedicated HD DVD CE players experienced a 183% quarterly increase, bringing the total number to 180,000 in the market.
A June 2007 report from the Consumer Electronics Association indicates most consumers are basing their purchasing decisions on pricing, and prices for HD DVD players have fallen 40% since the format's launch last year.
HD DVD promoters are touting a library of almost 1,000 titles for the holiday, including upcoming releases 300 and Heroes: Season One.
