HBO Video Jumps Into UMD1 Aug, 2005 By: Thomas K. Arnold
Entourage: The Complete First Season
HBO Video has become the latest home video supplier — and second member of the Warner family — to announce plans to release programming on the Universal Media Disc (UMD) for Sony's PlayStation Portable (PSP).
The cable network's home entertainment division will enter the UMD market with six titles. Da Ali G Show: Da Compleet First Seazon and Da Compleet Second Seazon arrive Sept. 13. Later in the fourth quarter comes Entourage: The Complete First Season, Todd McFarlane's Spawn 1, Chris Rock: Bigger & Blacker and Chris Rock: Never Scared.
All but one of the major studios are now supporting the UMD format, with nearly 140 titles either already released or scheduled to hit stores by the end of this year. The lone holdout is Warner Home Video, the developer of the mini DVD, a rival of UMD in the handheld market. Warner distributes DVDs for both New Line Home Entertainment and HBO Video, both of which are now in the UMD business. Industry sources expect Warner Home Video to join the fray shortly.
