Harry Potter Promos Already on the Ticket at Costco13 Feb, 2003 By: Jessica Wolf
While shoppers at a Costa Mesa, Calif., Best Buy last week took advantage of special Valentine's Day multipurchase offers on DVDs like My Big Fat Greek Wedding and Sweet Home Alabama, a nearby Costco location was already looking ahead to the sales magic of Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets.
As it did in the weeks prior to The Sorcerer's Stone release (and The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring), this Costco featured a huge Harry Potter-themed display next to the video section where shoppers could pick up a preorder form, pay $18.99 up front for Chamber and get it delivered to their home around street date along with a certificate good for their choice of a complimentary DVD copy of Black Beauty, Ladyhawke or The Witches. A clerk stocking DVDs nearby said there doesn't seem to be as much interest in the offer as for the Sorcerer's Stone release so far. But the display hasn't been up too long, he added. One shopper debated whether to preorder Chamber, but decided against it because she didn't think her kids would like any of the free DVDs and the price was too high. “I did this for the other one [Sorcerer's Stone] and paid almost $20, then I saw it for $15 somewhere else after it came out,” she said.
