Two new video games slated for a fall 2005 release are demonstrating the increasing convergence of music and gaming.
The new Electronic Arts' game Tiger Woods PGA Tour '06 set includes opening menus with the title track from Grammy-winning, multi-platinum rock group Dave Matthews Band's album Stand Up.
“This is the first time we've had a song in a video game, but it was appropriate,” Matthews said in a statement. “I think Tiger's a fan of ours … and we're all fans of his. It seemed kind of natural that if we were going to end up in a video game, it would be next to him.” The song seemed like a natural fit for the game, according to Matthews, because it had the right groove and tempo, not to mention a chorus reminiscent of a crowd cheer.
“When we were recording ‘Stand Up' in the studio, everyone had this reaction that it reminded them of sports,” he said. “So I think it was the only song that would really be right for the game.”
The Tiger Woods PGA Tour '06 in-game music soundtrack is part of the EA Sports Trax music initiative that debuted in 2001 with the intent to bring the hottest music to gamers.
“The sound of golf is not an easy one to define, but with Dave Matthews Band, we've found the perfect anthem for Tiger Woods PGA Tour '06,” Steve Schnur, worldwide executive of music and music marketing at EA, said in a statement.
The track is complemented by electronic tracks from The Supreme Beings of Leisure, Thievery Corporation and David Holmes.
In Tiger Woods PGA Tour ‘06, gamers will attempt to settle the debate of who's the greatest golfer of all time. They'll play such golf legends as Jack Nicklaus, Arnold Palmer and Ben Hogan on their terms and in their specific eras (equipment, clothing and all). However, Tiger Woods is there and after the same goal. Gamers will have to find him, stop him and ultimately supplant him as the No. 1 golfer of every era. Players can duel with Tiger in multiple matches as he chases and even taunts them in every tournament.
Developed by EA Redwood Shores, Tiger Woods PGA Tour '06 will be available for the PlayStation 2, Xbox and Nintendo GameCube in September 2005.
Music is the game when it comes to RedOctane's new Guitar Hero, slated for a fall release on PlayStation 2. Thanks to an exclusive agreement, the game features several famous Gibson Guitar models.
“Gibson guitars are an essential American rock element revered by musical artists worldwide for their incredible style and amazing sound,” said Kai Huang, CEO of RedOctane. “This is the first time a guitar manufacturer has been exclusively featured in a video game.”
Guitar Hero puts gamers at the center of their own rock band, featuring a selection of Gibson electric guitars to play and concert venues that grow in size as their music careers progress. The title includes more than 30 licensed rock songs, including tracks from Ozzy Osbourne, David Bowie, Boston, Sum 41, Audioslave, White Zombie, Franz Ferdinand and The Ramones.
The game has earned positive reviews and was named Best of Show 2005 at the Electronics Entertainment Expo.
