'Happy Feet' Dances to Encore12 Apr, 2007 By: Thomas K. Arnold
Warner Home Video's Happy Feet remained the top-selling DVD in the country for the second consecutive week, and also managed to surpass another Warner title, The Departed, to become the No. 1 seller so far this year.
Universal Studios' The Good Shepherd, meanwhile, debuted as the No. 1 renter, according to Home Media Magazine's rental chart for the week ended April 8. The film earned an estimated $8.7 million in rental stores, to $8.5 million for second-ranked The Pursuit of Happyness, from Sony Pictures, the previous week's top renter.
The Good Shepherd, the Oscar-nominated thriller directed by Robert De Niro, debuted at No. 3 on the Nielsen VideoScan First Alert sales chart, right behind Paramount's Charlotte's Web. The big-budget remake of the classic children's story, which features the voice of Julia Roberts and grossed $82.6 million in theaters, bowed at No. 5 on the rental chart, with earnings of $5.7 million.
Making a surprisingly strong debut its first week in stores was Genius Products' DVD release of The Weinstein Co.'s Black Christmas remake. The horror film earned just $16.2 million at the box office, but debuted at No. 11 on the sales chart and No. 14 on the rental chart, with $2.4 million.
Buena Vista's Jump In!, a Disney Channel movie along the lines of High School Musical, debuted at No. 9 on First Alert.
