Genius Ups Horror Slate

16 Oct, 2006 By: Erik Gruenwedel

With Halloween less than three weeks away, Genius Products has upped its horror/thriller profile with the acquisition of DVD rights to two independent movies from Toronto-based Peace Arch Entertainment Group's Archetype Films.

The titles include Bottom Feeder (2006), starring Tom Sizemore, and The Mad (2007), with Billy Zane, about a doctor and his teenage daughter who are terrorized by flesh-eating zombies at a truck stop.

The Santa Monica, Calif.-based Genius, which is 70% owned by The Weinstein Co., in May announced it had acquired the DVD rights to five thrillers from Peach Arch.

The first title, The Last Sect, starring David Carradine, was released by Genius on DVD Sept. 12 for $19.99.

Other movies included Living Death, starring Kristi Swanson; Dead Mary, starring Dominique Swain; U.K.M.: The Ultimate Killing Machine, starring Michael Madsen; Troubled Waters, starring Jennifer Beals; 5ive Girls, starring Ron Perlman; Heartstopper, starring Robert Englund; and Warriors of Terra starring Edward Furlong.

Earlier this year, Peach Arch acquired kaBOOM! Entertainment Inc., a leading Canadian independent home entertainment studio for about $7.4 million.
