Genius Gets Bump with Peace Arch9 Jun, 2008 By: Erik Gruenwedel
Fiscally challenged Genius Products Inc. June 9 got a boost of sorts when Toronto-based Peace Arch Entertainment Group Inc. said it will distribute feature film Chapter 27 and romantic comedy Watching the Detectives on DVD via Genius.
The news sent shares of Santa Monica, Calif.-based Genius, which is 70% owned by The Weinstein Co., up 18% to 26 cents per share.
Psychological drama Chapter 27 (streeting Sept. 30) explores Mark David Chapman's gradual breakdown during the days leading up to his murder of music icon John Lennon. It stars Jared Leto (Requiem for a Dream, Panic Room and Fight Club), Judah Friedlander (Zoolander and Meet the Parents) and Lindsay Lohan (Mean Girls, Freaky Friday and Herbie Fully Loaded).
Chapter 27 bowed at the Sundance Film Festival and the Zurich Film Festival, the latter where director Jarrett Schaefer won the prize for best debut feature film.
Watching the Detectives, which bows Aug. 12, stars Cillian Murphy (28 Days Later and Cold Mountain) as a hapless owner of a video store who falls for a femme fatale customer, played by Lucy Liu (Kill Bill: Vol. 1 and Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle).
Detectives premiered at the 2007 Tribeca Film Festival.
