GameStop Sees Record Holiday Sales12 Jan, 2009 By: Chris Tribbey
Video game retailer GameStop enjoyed record sales from Nov. 2, 2008, to Jan. 3, 2009, with the company reporting nine-week sales of $2.8 billion, up 22.3% from the same period in 2007-8.
New video game releases led the way, but GameStop also noted that the Nintendo Wii and Xbox 360 helped drive store sales.
“As expected the consumer saw great entertainment value in video games in one of the most challenging holiday shopping seasons ever,” said GameStop CEO Daniel DeMatteo. “A major highlight of the period was that GameStop’s sales grew in every worldwide territory in which we operate.”
The day after Christmas saw the third-highest sales volume day in the company’s history. GameStop expects to report its full 2008 financials in mid-March.
