Fox, UrbanWorks Deal is a Laughing Matter

13 Jul, 2004 By: Holly J. Wagner

20th Century Fox Home Entertainment and UrbanWorks Entertainment will jointly develop, produce and distribute urban-themed comedy DVDs branded under UrbanWorks Platinum Comedy Series banner, the studios announced today.

"This deal reflects our commitment to the urban community and comedy genre. UrbanWorks has a proven track record and at Fox, we know how to pick a winner, said John Scott, VP of acquisitions for Fox Home Entertainment. “Because of our win-win attitudes, this relationship can only result in major success for the both of us."

Under the deal Fox plans to take over distribution of UrbanWorks Platinum Comedy Series titles starring Cedric The Entertainer and Steve Harvey.

UrbanWorks and Fox will also co-produce new programs for the popular line, which features standup comedy concerts from other superstar talent including Dave Chappelle, D.L. Hughley and Mo'Nique.

"The Platinum Comedy Series has sold over a million units, currently making it the most successful comedy line on the market on par with Def Comedy Jam. This is a natural evolution for the company," said UrbanWorks president Jeff Clanagan. "Fox will be a great partner for us and this new venture will further solidify UrbanWorks as the preeminent studio in urban entertainment."

Fox will co-fund all development, production and retail marketing for new original Platinum Comedy titles. UrbanWorks will spearhead talent procurement, creative development, consumer marketing and production. The companies will also seek to exploit the comedy shows in other entertainment media domestically and internationally including television and video-on-demand (VOD). Both companies will share in the profits from the venture.
