Fox Kicks Off Q428 Jul, 2008 By: Thomas K. Arnold
Horton Hears a Who!
The fourth-quarter DVD derby is officially off and running, with 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment slotting Dr. Seuss' Horton Hears a Who! for a Dec. 9 release — the first major theatrical film to get an official Q4 release date.
Horton, at $153.4 million the year's No. 7 movie, will be released as a two-disc special edition DVD and Blu-ray Disc and comes with a digital copy that consumers can play on their computers, iPods or other portable devices. The release comes with nine featurettes, deleted scenes and a new Ice Age short “Surviving Sid.”
In addition to the DVD and Blu-ray Disc, Fox will offer consumers a gift set that comes with a Horton plush.
Horton also has been named Holiday Ambassador for Macy's. A giant inflatable of the elephant character — 66 feet long, 36 feet wide and 48 feet tall — will participate in the 82nd annual Macy's Thanksgiving Day parade. The department store chain also will feature an exclusive Horton plush.
“Dr Seuss' Horton Hears A Who! and Macy's Thanksgiving Parade is the perfect blending of two beloved and timeless family classics,” said Mary Daily, EVP of marketing for 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment. “The awareness generated by the parade and the ensuing in-store promotional support will heighten interest in purchasing the DVD and Blu-ray Disc across all retailers in this critical fourth quarter.”
At least 18 theatrical features that grossed at least $25 million in theaters are expected to be released on DVD and Blu-ray Disc in the fourth quarter of this year, a period in which studios typically realize as much as 40% of their total annual home entertainment revenue.
