First Weinstein DVD Release ‘Derailed' Coming From Genius26 Jan, 2006 By: Thomas K. Arnold
Bob and Harvey Weinstein are ramping up their new DVD machine, slotting their first release and tapping ex-MGM Home Entertainment publicity chief Steve Wegner to spread the word.
The brothers have set a March 21 release date for their first title, Derailed, starring Clive Owen and Jennifer Aniston. The DVD will be released through Genius Products, which has exclusive U.S. home video distribution rights to all films owned or controlled by The Weinstein Co.
Genius, which soon will be majority-owned by the Weinsteins, also has hired Wegner as VP of publicity. He joins a cadre of ex-Warner Home Video executives that includes president and CEO Trevor Drinkwater, EVP of marketing Michael Radiloff and GM and EVP Christine Martinez.
Derailed grossed $35.7 million in theaters. The film will bow on DVD in two versions — the ‘R'-rated theatrical cut and an unrated version. Bonus features include a making-of featurette and five deleted scenes.
The Weinstein Co. and Genius Products are operating under an interim distribution agreement until a joint venture deal closes. Genius has opened a Santa Monica, Calif., office.
