First Season of SNL Arrives on DVD

30 Oct, 2006 By: Thomas K. Arnold

“Saturday Night Live” is finally getting the complete-season DVD treatment. After years of being parceled out in various “best of” compilations, the groundbreaking sketch comedy TV show will see its complete first season arrive on DVD Dec. 5, from Universal Studios Home Entertainment.

The eight-DVD set ($69.98) includes all 24 original, unedited 90-minute episodes featuring the original cast of seven Not Ready for Prime Time Players: Dan Aykroyd, John Belushi, Chevy Chase, Jane Curtin, Garrett Morris, Laraine Newman and Gilda Radner from the 1975-76 season. Both the picture and the sound have been digitally remastered.

All the original musical performances by the likes of Simon & Garfunkel, Jimmy Cliff, Carly Simon and Patti Smith will be included, in addition to opening monologues by such guest hosts as Richard Pryor, Rob Reiner and George Carlin. The set comes in specially designed gift packaging with a limited-edition collectible book, audition footage and the cast interview that aired the day before the first show was broadcast on Oct. 11, 1975.

All 24 episodes also will be available Dec. 5 for individual purchase on the Apple iTunes Music Store.

A Universal Studios spokesman said future release plans for additional complete-season sets are being evaluated.
