Europeans Keen On Downloading17 Apr, 2003 By: Jessica Wolf
Students — primarily males — are the leading online movie downloaders in Europe, using sites like CinemaNow and Kazaa to download, a Forrester research study has found. Five percent of Europe's online consumers are movie downloaders, the study revealed.
The largest percentage of movie and video downloaders in the region are in Sweden's sophis-ticated online market, with 8 percent of the country's online consumers downloading movies (see chart).
Southern Europe is also dominant, because there is a relatively high penetration of broadband technology in the area, the study found.
Movie downloaders are predominantly young, male and spend 15.4 hours online each week — more than twice as many hours as the average online consumer in Europe. Of online European consumers, 76 percent of movie/video downloaders are male, and 35 percent are students. Twenty-seven percent of movie/downloaders in Europe have a home theater system and 40 percent own DVD players.
Of the region's movie downloaders, most (86 percent) use broadband access to get their product. Only 14 percent of Europe's downloaders rely on standard or modem Internet connections. And 86 percent of movie downloaders said they also download music off the Internet.
