DVD Pirate Gets Slapped With Jail Sentence

28 Aug, 2006 By: Thomas K. Arnold

New Zealand authorities have handed down the country's first jail sentence for DVD piracy under the Copyright Act, The Hollywood Reporter reports. John Houston received a two-year jail term after pleading guilty to 21 charges relating to pirating movies, which earned him nearly $100,000 in each of the past five years. The conviction came as research by the New Zealand Federation Against Copyright Theft shows 25% of all DVDs and movies shown in the country are illegal, twice what the industry thought.
