DVD Makes Bedtime a Dream29 Jun, 2005 By: Meryl Schoenbaum
Ask any parent what the most frustrating part of their day is, and it's likely the answer will be putting their child to bed.
Steve Syatt, founder of The Shushybye Co., has designed a product line to make children look forward to going to bed.
“What we offer are products that help parents prepare their children to go to sleep every night,” Syatt said. “Our brand encourages kids to go to sleep during the day for naps, so they also will want to sleep at night.”
Along with establishing the Encino, Calif.-based Shushybye Co., Syatt heads up SSA Public Relations. Syatt's other role, as father to a young son and daughter, inspired him to write a book about a place called Shushyland — inhabited by friendly characters with names like Snoozles, Dozie and Zeez, who make sure children's dreams come true.
Syatt's own Shushybye dream was answered in 2004 with the release of a book (Shushybye: Snoozles Saves the Night) and CD. This year, the franchise is expanding to include sleepwear, toys and now a DVD called The Shushybye Dream Band Live on Tour, being distributed by WGBH Boston Sept. 27 ($14.95 DVD or VHS).
The video includes footage from a concert by The Shushybye Dream Band filmed at the Madrid Theater in Canoga Park, Calif., and attended by 250 children, local preschoolers and their parents. The setlist consists of upbeat tunes about the joys of sleep to which children and parents can sing along and dance. Syatt composed all the songs.
Video stores can obtain the DVD shrinkwrapped with the book by contacting WGBH Boston. For information on related products, contact The Shushybye Co. at 818/501-3750, or visit the company's Web site, www.shushybye.com.
Marketing for the DVD includes a multi-city tour of The Shushybye Dream Band, with performances in Los Angeles, New York and Philadelphia in September; Minneapolis, Dallas and Boston in October; Chicago and Denver in November; and Phoenix and San Diego in December. There also will be free screenings of the DVD at Loews Theaters during September in markets where the tour will take place.
