BDA to Start Licensing Ultra HD Blu-ray

The Blu-ray Disc Association (BDA) Aug. 5 announced it would begin licensing the Ultra HD Blu-ray format starting Aug. 24. The new packaged-media format will enable delivery of Ultra HD content to the burgeoning market of Ultra HD households, expected to grow from 11.7 million Ultra HD TVs in 2014 to 95.6 million in 2019.

Fox Posts Q4 Profit Decline

Tough year-over-year theatrical and home entertainment comparisons contributed to 20th Century Fox Studios reporting fourth-quarter (ended June 30) pre-tax operating income of $269 million, down 21% from pre-tax operating income of $339 million during the previous-year period. Revenue fell 32% to $1.9 billion from $2.8 billion a year ago.

Warner Home Video Aug. 5 reported second-quarter (ended June 30) revenue from packaged-media and digital distribution of theatrical content topped $461 million, down about 18% from revenue of $563 million during the prior-year period.

Dish Loses 81,000 Video Subscribers in Q2

Dish Network Aug. 5 reported it lost 81,000 pay-TV subscribers in the second quarter ended June 30. The satellite TV operator lost 44,000 video subs during the previous-year period. It ended the period with 13.9 million subs.
