DivX to Shutter Video Download Site25 Feb, 2008 By: Erik Gruenwedel
DivX, the digital media format that rivals Microsoft's Windows Media Video and others, Feb. 25 said it would cease operations of Stage6.com, a video file-sharing site.
The service will cease operations Feb. 28 with the upload function already terminated.
Launched last July, Stage6 was envisioned to offer a high-def option in the burgeoning video file-sharing community dominated by MySpace and YouTube.
On its Web site, a spokesperson explained that Stage6 originated as an experiment that had become too expensive to operate.
With no interested buyers of the property and unwillingness to spin into a separate private company, DivX had little choice but to turn off the lights, according to the spokesperson.
“There are a lot of other details involved, but at the end of the day it's really as simple as that,” said the spokesperson.
