DivXNetworks Inc, creatorsof the DivX MPEG-4 video compression technology, and Broadway Television Network, the company that produces and distributes Broadwaymusicals recorded live-in-performance for digital cinema, pay-per-view,VHS/DVD and video-on-demand, on Thursday announced the launch of a video-on-demand service at BroadwayOnline.com, owned by Broadway Television Network.
Broadway Television Network has licensed the DivX OpenVideo System to sell downloads of popularBroadway hits Jekyll and Hyde: The Musical and Smokey Joe's Cafe: The Songs of Leiber and Stoller at http://www.BroadwayOnline.com.
The new service will allow consumers to purchase a 5-day rental of either production for $5.95 from the BroadwayOnline.com Web site ($4.95 for BroadwayOnline.com Club members) and begin viewing the show almostimmediately. Users can download Jekyll and Hyde or Smokey Joe's Cafe: The Songs of Leiber and Stoller by clicking on the Broadway on Broadband linkat BroadwayOnline.com and filling out payment information. Once theproduction has been downloaded, customers are free to watch the recordingon-demand for the next five days. DivXNetworks technology allows users to view the show in full-screen format a few minutes after the download has begun.
