Disney Titles To Join CinemaNow.com Lineup15 Sep, 2003 By: Holly J. Wagner
Buena Vista Pay Television, Inc., will make classic titles from the Disney library available on Internet video-on-demand (VOD) site CinemaNow.com, the companies announced today.
The addition of Disney product on CinemaNow.com follows close on the heels of Disney's deal to offer its films on Movielink.com, the other Internet VOD site with major studio backing. CinemaNow has backing from Lions Gate Entertainment, Blockbuster and Microsoft.
"The advent of digital technology has provided new ways for us to offer our consumers faster and more direct access to the movies they want to watch," said Dan Cohen, SVP and GM, Buena Vista Pay Television. "The Walt Disney Company is committed to using new technologies, such as Internet video-on-demand, to provide our audience with a more convenient and satisfying viewing experience. In creating a distribution relationship in this endeavor, CinemaNow was a clear choice."
As part of the agreement, CinemaNow will offer titles from Disney and its affiliated companies including Walt Disney Pictures, Miramax Films, Touchstone Pictures, Hollywood Pictures, and Dimension Films. New release titles will be made available the same day they become available via traditional pay-per-view outlets, while previously released films are also available from the extensive Disney library.
Some of the first-run titles to be offered include Martin Scorsese's Gangs of New York starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Daniel Day-Lewis and Cameron Diaz; and Shanghai Knights, starring Jackie Chan and Owen Wilson. Miramax's Oscar winner Chicago, starring Renee Zellweger, Catherine Zeta-Jones and Richard Gere, will debut Oct. 3. All Disney titles will be available in Microsoft's Windows Media 9 Series format.
"The Internet is now starting to realize its potential as a legitimate, revenue-generating distribution platform for entertainment and media content," said Bruce Eisen, EVP of CinemaNow. "Internet video-on-demand is poised for explosive growth in the coming years. This agreement confirms not only CinemaNow's position as a leader in this emerging space, but also Disney's commitment to taking full advantage of this new distribution platform. We are thrilled to offer our growing customer base the high-caliber films that Disney is recognized for and look forward to continuing this relationship."
