Disney Opts for Custom DVD Screener Safeguard

24 Oct, 2005 By: Erik Gruenwedel

The Walt Disney Co. today announced it would safeguard its Academy Award DVD screeners with custom encoded encryption technology from Cinea, a unit of Dolby Laboratories.

Unlike standard anti-piracy measures, Cinea's copy protection encrypts each disc with a unique code playable only on Cinea S-View DVD players given to individual voting members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.

The encrypted disc cannot be viewed on any other DVD player or computer.

Originally introduced last year for the Oscars, the S-View players reportedly arrived too late to voters and pirated versions of numerous nominated films found their way onto the Internet.
