Lionsgate Aug. 8 proved why it remains bullish on home entertainment (notably discs), reporting more than $169 million in first-quarter (ended June 30) retail revenue, which was up 16% from revenue of $145.5 million during the previous-year period.
AMC Networks Aug. 8 reported second-quarter (ended June 30) net income of $137.5 million, compared with net income of $41.5 million during the previous-year period. Revenue topped $379 million, compared with $327 million last year.
Gaiam Vivendi Entertainment Aug. 7 said it grew its market share in non-theatrical home entertainment distribution nearly 2% to 14.2% in the second quarter, ended June 30, compared with the same period last year.
The pattern is this: DVD sales continue to decline, but Blu-ray Disc and digital sales continue to post impressive increases, with the biggest lift, in terms of sheer dollars, always coming from Blu-ray Disc.
