Digital Playground Bows Dual Format Cheerleaders

24 Mar, 2008 By: Erik Gruenwedel

Taking a page from Hollywood, Digital Playground April 4 for the first time will street new adult film Cheerleaders as a Blu-ray and standard DVD combo release for $49.95.

Heretofore an HD DVD stalwart, Van Nuys, Calif.-based Digital Playground last month wasted no time switching to Blu-ray following the end of the format war.

With two titles (AVN award winners Babysitters and Pirates) ranked the top two selling Blu-ray releases, according to AdultDVDEmpire.com, Digital Playground envisions Blu-ray expanding the market for adult packaged media.

“A film like Cheerleaders will allow us to reach a wide demographic on the merits of the cast list alone,” said CEO Samantha Lewis. “Blu-ray will make it even better.”

Ali Joone, co-producer/owner of Digital Playground, said the company has more than 200 films shot in high-def, all of which he said would eventually see a Blu-ray release.

Joone, who has turned Pirates into one of the most lucrative adult franchises ever, is finishing production on the sequel, Pirates II: Stagnetti's Revenge, due out in September.

Cheerleaders features DP's venerable contract stars Jesse Jane, Adrianna Lynn, Stoya and Shay Jordan, among others.
