Digimarc Receives First European Patent

11 Dec, 2001 By: Hive News

Digimarc Corp.has won its first European patent from the European Patent Office in Munich, Germany, covering digital watermarking technology and methods for copy control in video and audio media content.

"Digital watermarking applications have global significance and reach, so we are pleased to extend our intellectual property portfolio to include our first European patent,'' said Bill Conwell, v.p. of intellectual property at Digimarc. ``This patent stems from work pioneered by Digimarc in 1994 and is relevant to the work Digimarc is doing with the Video Watermarking Group (VWM) to protect digital movies from unauthorized copying.''

Digimarc originally received notification of the patent grant in February of this year, followed by a nine-month public review period ending last month. With the European Patent Office process completed and the patent granted, Digimarc is seeking ``nationalization'' of the patent in the major countries of the European Union, which could give it a toehold on the continent for dealing with European video suppliers.
