DVD software and hardware were still hot-ticket retail items in the first quarter of this year, with double-digit growth, according to DEG: The Digital Entertainment Group stats released today.
More than 400 million DVDs were shipped to retail in the first quarter of 2005, according to figures compiled by Kaplan, Swicker and Simha on behalf of DEG. That's an increase of 21 percent from Q1 2004.
On the hardware side, according to Consumer Electronics Association (CEA) data compiled by DEG, consumers purchased more than 7.5 million DVD players in the first three months of 2005, a 13 percent increase from last year.
The DEG estimates there are 73 million DVD households in the United States and predicts 80 percent of domestic homes will have at least one DVD player by the end of this year.
