December Hits Similar to Last Year's Slate

17 Nov, 2003 By: Stephanie Prange

This year's December slate packs a little more of a box office punch compared to last year's -- though not by much. This year's slate boasts five $100 million-plus box office titles, versus four in last year's lineup.

“The dollars, number, release schedule, including category, are similar,” said Ray Jewell, owner of Mister Video, Athens, Tenn., who questioned whether advertising would continue to boost awareness titles after the first week in December.

In the rental arena, Todd Zaganiacz, owner of Video Zone in South Deerfield, Mass., and president of the New England Buying Group, said he sees a dark horse in the running.

“I think your sleeper of the month is going to be The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen -- a great film, but with lackluster box office of approximately $60 million,” he said. “This should be a rental success.”
