On Cue Gets A Name Change

2 Apr, 2002 By: Hive News

The Musicland Group, Inc. today announced it will unify its 200-plus rural market On Cue stores under the Sam Goody name and will enhance the video game and electronics sections.

The process is expected to begin in June and be completed by the end of the summer. The change will boost Sam Goody's presence nationwide to more than 800 stores. In addition, the company plans to open 30 new rural-market Sam Goody stores during this fiscal year.

"Last fall's test of the Sam Goody brand in rural markets showed dramatic improvements over the average On Cue store results both at opening and over time," said Kevin Freeland, president of Musicland stores. "The name change of the chain will allow us to capitalize early on the strong sales as well as leverage advertising and increase the efficiency of our field team."

The converted On Cue stores will expand the video game and electronics areas. The stores will continue to carry the rural-market product mix which includes the same extensive selection of music and movies as all Sam Goody stores, in addition to computer software, books and musical instruments.

The chain announced the following operational assignments to support the change:

Tim Sheehan has been promoted to SVP of stores. Sheehan, previously VP of retail operations, will report to Freeland and oversee Sam Goody, Suncoast and Media Play field personnel, retail operations and sales development.

Jon Estes becomes VP of Sam Goody stores. Previously VP of On Cue stores, Estes will report to Sheehan and be responsible for Sam Goody stores and the conversion.

Kevin Krenos was promoted to VPt of Suncoast stores. Previously regional director for Media Play, Krenos will report to Sheehan and oversee the 400-plus store chain.

John Pershing was promoted to VP of retail operations (replacing Tim Sheehan). Previously director of loss prevention, Pershing will report to Sheehan and oversee retail operations for all 1,300-plus Musicland stores.

The Musicland Group, Inc. is a wholly owned subsidiary of Best Buy Co., and operates 1,321 retail stores in 49 states, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands.
