Cleaning Up With Soap Stars

Nicole Kidman, Tom Cruise and Renee Zellweger may rule the Oscar red carpet, but other stars have their followings, too.

“General Hospital” actor/director Corbin Bernsen (“L.A. Law”) — whose Oct. 18 comedy release Carpool Guy ($19.95) features 10 of the top soap stars — is a fan favorite to about 30 million soap viewers.

The title is being marketed and distributed by L.A. Ideas through some retail and via the Web site www.carpoolguythemovie.com.

The Carpool cast includes Rick Hearst and Anthony Geary (“General Hospital”); Sean Kanan (“The Bold and the Beautiful”); Lauralee Bell, Jeanne Cooper, Sharon Case and Kristoff St. John (“The Young and the Restless”); Lesli Kay (“As the World Turns”); and Patrika Darbo (“Days of Our Lives”).

Carpool also will premiere Oct. 11 at the ArcLight Theatre in Hollywood as part of a Home Town movie tour in 12 to 14 markets nationwide through the end of the year. Tickets to the theatrical screenings are available only online via a drawing at www.carpoolguythemovie.com.

“It is a loss leader tour for us to promote the DVD,” said Kyle Borg L.A. Ideas CEO. “Rather than pepper-spraying the market like Hollywood does, we really want to find the buyers, find the consumers and market directly to them.”

The DVD will be promoted through ads in fan magazines, plugs on cable's Soap Network and associated Web sites.

Ideas' next film, 3-Day Test, will feature another soap cast and mainstream actor. Fans online will be able to select the cast, movie poster and even see video clips.

“It is a sustainable product that narrows in on a very specific audience, and, thus, we are not getting cluttered with everything else the studios are trying to put out,” Borg said.
