Circuit City Announces 'Firedog' Winner23 May, 2007 By: John Latchem
Chickahominy Volunteer Fire Department Station 10 of Ashland, Va., earned the grand prize in Circuit City's “Firedog Across America” essay contest. The reward came in the form of a $141,402 check, a combination of the $100,00 grand prize, a $20,000 finalist award, and the department's portion of an online prize pool.
Circuit City launched the program this past December to support communities by identifying and rewarding exceptional public service. Station 10 was nominated by Winnie Southworth for helping her son, who has Down syndrome, experience his dream of becoming a fire fighter.
From a pool of 5,082 nominations, 10 firehouses earned $20,000 donations for being named finalists, and the corresponding essayists won a home “techover” valued at $10,000 from Firedog, Circuit City's consumer-electronic tech-support brand.
Total awards amounted to more than $700,000.
