CinemaNow Has New Portable Deal

31 Aug, 2005 By: Kurt Indvik

VOD service CinemaNow Inc. will begin offering its movies and music videos via Archos Inc. portable digital media players, kicking off with a new co-marketing agreement between the two companies.

Consumers who buy Archos' AV 700 Mobile DVR will receive two free download-to-own videos from CinemaNow's portable video collection. The AV 700 can store up to 400 hours of video. Plans also include five free downloads of music videos with the purchase of the Archos Gmini 402 Pocket Multimedia Center. CinemaNow has more than 550 full-length features and more than 200 music videos available for portable video players that are Microsoft PlayForSure compliant.

“As we've seen with the success of online music stores, the marriage of services and portable devices is an essential component in the growth of digital distribution,” said Bruce Eisen, president of CinemaNow.

A new report by In-Stat notes that early adopters will remain the primary market for portable media players this year, citing the fairly hefty price tag for these devices and competing formats such as handheld game devices and portable DVD players.

Content is key to the growth of portable media players, said In-Stat analyst Stephanie Guza. “The good news for PMP vendors is that in the past six months there has been increased activity among manufacturers and content providers to promote the availability of video content for PMPs,” she said. By 2009, In-Stat forecasts worldwide shipments of PMPs will reach 7.5 million.
