'Cinderella' Cleans Up

Buena Vista Home Entertainment has struck gold with its two-disc special edition of Cinderella, with industry sources pegging first-week sales at 3.2 million units.

The 55-year-old animated classic is the latest “Platinum Series” DVD from Buena Vista, a marquee reserved for the highest echelon of animated Walt Disney Co. movies. Based on an average street price of $20, Cinderella in one week has generated consumer spending of more than $60 million.

Insiders predict Cinderella will wind up as one of the year's 10 top-selling DVDs.

The last “Platinum Series” DVD from Buena Vista, Bambi, was released March 1 and has since sold more than 5 million units.
