Chains Lure Buyers for Valentine's Day

Valentine's Day meant do-it-yourself boxed sets for two mass-market retailers. “Love it! Create your own gift set,” touted Target's Feb. 5 flyer.

Titles for $10 each from Buena Vista, HBO, Lionsgate, New Line, Universal and Warner filled up a four-compartment pink box on the first page.

Circuit City's flyer, emblazoned with pink and red, was selling four DVDs for $20 from New Line, Paramount, Fox, Universal and Warner, as well as a wide assortment of $7.49 DVDs to “cozy up with” and $9.99 DVDs “she'll love” or “he'll put the remote down for.”

Best Buy didn't put its DVDs on the front page, but was offering a free $10 gift card with the purchase of two of a select 27 DVDs, mostly romances or action films with attractive leading men.
