CBS Puts Prime Time on iTunes9 Jun, 2006 By: Erik Gruenwedel
CBS Corp. is making its entire primetime lineup available for download on Apple's iTunes music store for $1.99 per episode.
CBS shows on iTunes for playback on video iPod devices now include venerable TV franchises “Survivor,” “CSI: Crime Scene Investigation,” “CSI: Miami” and “CSI: N.Y.,” in addition to “Numb3rs” and “NCIS.”
The network joins The Walt Disney Co., which last fall pioneered the availability of prime time TV fare on iTunes with the inclusion of episodes from ABC TV's “Lost,” “Desperate Housewives and Alias for download.
Apple claims to have sold more than 30 million video downloads to date.
CBS, which had made available college basketball's annual March Madness national championship tournament on iTunes, previously bypassed the Apple Web site when offering episodic downloads of Survivor on CBS.com.
“iTunes has proven that people enjoy viewing shows on their computer or iPod, which provides an opportunity to reach new audiences with our hit shows and gives our existing viewers a chance to catch up on missed episodes,” said Larry Kramer, president, CBS Digital Media.
